It appears that Alex Bregman’s time with the Houston Astros is ended. Bregman spent the first nine years of his major league career with the Astros, where he earned two World Series championships. However, after contract discussions stagnated, Houston added Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes to fill the corner infield positions, possibly putting the final nail in Bregman’s career with the Astros. Nonetheless, Bregman’s market remains fairly aggressive.
Deesha Thosar of FOX Sports anticipated that Bregman would join with the Boston Red Sox this winter. The talented infielder’s contract is expected to be worth between $150 million and $200 million.
“Just like last year, when we all thought Juan Soto would flourish with Yankee Stadium’s short porch, Bregman and the Green Monster have always seemed like a perfect match,” says Thosar. “Boston’s lefty-heavy order need a power-hitting righty to capitalize on that lofty left field, and Bregman’s knack for blasting home runs over the Crawford Boxes should translate well at Fenway Park.
“He’d also be a significant defensive boost at third base over Rafael Devers, who could move to first or DH. Furthermore, the Red Sox would have the public-facing, franchise-defining competitor they have long desired. The Red Sox have the funds, and perhaps even the desperation, to complete this transaction.” The Red Sox can afford to contract Bregman for $200 million. He’d also be an excellent addition to their lineup. Adding an experienced righty to a lineup loaded with lefties would be ideal for Boston.
While a few other teams, notably the New York Mets and Detroit Tigers, are still after Bregman, the Red Sox appear to be the favorites to snag the veteran.
