The Boston Red Sox appear to be racing against time in their search for an impact right-handed bat.
Nolan Arenado’s trade market has yet to produce a deal for the St. Louis Cardinals, and MLB Network’s Jon Morosi expressed no hope about a forthcoming agreement.
Meanwhile, Alex Bregman is one of the best hitters remaining in a market that has come to a halt. That is not to suggest that the light will not turn green before spring training, but moves must take place for the Red Sox and other teams, and pivot decisions will be required if the player chooses to go elsewhere.
Boston’s roster is completed, and there is still a need for a veteran, impact bat in the lineup. If the offseason speculation of making that addition fails, the Red Sox will be in a difficult position to expect too much from young talents like Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell.
Boston has not gone all-in on Arenado, and St. Louis has yet to feel confident enough in an offer to accept. If Bregman selects another suitor, could pure need for both teams eventually break the ice in the Arenado situation, bringing the Red Sox and Cardinals to a potentially awkward but essential trade?
