Four-time MLB All-Star. This offseason, Juan Soto signed an unprecedented 15-year contract with the New York Mets worth $765 million. Soto spent one season with the New York Yankees, where he helped the storied American League organization make its 41st World Series appearance. Soto, a 2024 American League All-Star, finished third in MVP voting behind Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and former teammate Aaron Judge, who won unanimously. Soto is one of the top hitters in Major League Baseball, with a career OPS+ of 160, ranking third among active players.
While Soto is no longer a Yankee, the 26-year-old slugger appears to have maintained a connection with at least one of his former teammates.
On Tuesday, Soto commented on a post by Yankees relief pitcher Luke Weaver on Instagram. Soto responded to a video of Weaver’s offseason bullpen training with a single remark. “Unicorn,” Soto added.
Weaver was selected off waivers by the New York Yankees from the Seattle Mariners in 2023 and went on to become a standout reliever for the reigning American League champions. In 62 games for the Yankees last season, Weaver had a 2.89 ERA and struck out 103 batters in 84 innings pitched. The Yankees relied heavily on Weaver in their 2024 postseason run, as he made 12 appearances in October, posting a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched. Weaver also had four saves, leading the 2024 MLB playoffs.
The Yankees exercised Weaver’s 2025 club option for $2.5 million. The 31-year-old reliever will be eligible for unrestricted free agency after the season.
