While the Tennessee football team has had a lot of good news this summer, head coach Josh Heupel and his staff recently received a huge setback. In case you missed it, special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler is departing to join Matt Rhule’s Nebraska staff.

Tennessee’s special teams have excelled in recent seasons, thanks in large part to Ekeler. Ekeler, a Nebraska native, is returning home after previously working for the Cornhuskers. Before moving from Knoxville to Lincoln, Ekeler took to social media to say a heartfelt goodbye to followers worldwide. You can tell how difficult this decision was for him.

In addition to acting as the team’s special teams coordinator, Ekeler oversaw the outside linebackers group. In the responses to his message to the fanbase, many people are offering Ekeler a lot of affection, and properly so.

During his time with the Vols, he was recognized for being an excellent leader who coached his team with great enthusiasm. His energy will be missed by the team both on and off the field. This also leaves a significant hole in Heupel’s staff.

He will now be looking for a new special teams coordinator and OLB coach. Fortunately, Heupel did not have to replace defensive coordinator Tim Banks, who agreed to an extension with the organization despite outside interest.

The same cannot be true for Ekeler, who is preparing to relocate to Nebraska for the next chapter of his career. It’s difficult to see him leave the Vols, but everyone wishes him the best on his new path.
