Mike McDaniel, the Miami Dolphins’ head coach, is reunited with Bobby Slowik, an offensive assistant he worked with when coaching the San Francisco 49ers.
On Feb. 11, ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques reported that the Dolphins had hired Slowik as their senior pass game coordinator.
“Slowik spent the past two seasons as the Texans’ offensive coordinator; they won the AFC South and reached the AFC divisional round in both seasons,” according to Louis-Jacques. “But Houston ranked 22nd in both yards per game and expected points added in 2024, and Slowik was fired in late January.”
However, in his first season as offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, the team’s offense was one of the season’s biggest surprises. C.J. Stroud, Texans quarterback, received the Offensive Rookie of the Year title in 2023.
As a rookie, Stroud averaged 8.2 yards per pass and had a completion rate of 63.9%. He also has 23 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions.
In 2023, the Texans’ offense ranked 12th in yards and 13th in points scored. The team was also rated ninth in passing yards.
Dolphins Hire Bobby Slowik as Pass Game Coordinator
After losing his job with the Texans, Slowik found a natural fit with the Dolphins. McDaniel and Slowik were on the same coaching staff for the 49ers from 2017 to 2021.
Slowik spent his first two seasons in San Francisco as a defensive quality control coach. McDaniel served as the run game coordinator for San Francisco at the time.
Slowik began working as an offensive assistant in 2019. When McDaniel was named the team’s offensive coordinator in 2021, he took on the role as passing game specialist.
During that season, McDaniel and Slowik led the 49ers to 12th place in passing yards. While this may not sound spectacular, San Francisco ranked 29th in passing attempts that season.
In 2021, the 49ers had the highest net passing yards per attempt.
Slowik stayed on San Francisco’s staff in practically the same position in 2022, although McDaniel moved to Miami. Slowik became Houston’s offensive coordinator a year later.
In 2024, the Texans finished 22nd in yards and 19th in points scored. They also ranked 15th in rushing yards and 21st in passing.
Slowik Joining Brother on Dolphins Coaching Staff
Slowik will be joined by his brother, Ryan Slowik, as coaches in Miami next season.
Ryan rejoined the Dolphins coaching staff in 2022, after a hiatus of five years. He has played three different defensive roles over the last three seasons. In 2024, Ryan was the defensive backs coach and pass game specialist.
Essentially, the Slowik brothers will be coaching the same thing in 2025 – the passing game — but from opposing perspectives.

This will be the first time the Slowik brothers have been on the same NFL coaching staff. Before joining the Dolphins, Ryan was the Cleveland Browns’ outside linebackers coach in 2016.
From 2017 to 21, he coached at the college level in Tennessee. Throughout his tenure, Ryan has coached the Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Jets.
