The Kansas City Royals began spring training in Surprise, Arizona, with the majority of their pitching staff healthy and prepared for the upcoming season. There were two exceptions Wednesday, when the team’s pitchers and catchers had their first formal workout at the club’s training complex: veteran right-handed pitchers James McArthur and Alec Marsh.

McArthur underwent offseason surgery on his right elbow. He had two screws inserted into his elbow to fix a fracture. Marsh, meanwhile, contended with some right-shoulder discomfort this offseason but is gradually increasing his exercise.

Marsh, Kris Bubic, and Daniel Lynch IV are among the Royals’ left-handed pitchers. Veteran right-hander Kyle Wright, who was traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Kansas City Royals in November 2023, will also be worth watching out for.

This spring, the Royals will have open competition for certain roster positions. Marsh is competing (with several others) for the fifth position in the starting rotation. He took over the role last spring and finished with a 4.53 ERA in 26 games.

“I think that depth, and all those guys doing whatever it takes to help us win, is going to be helpful,” Quatraro told the press. McArthur recorded a 4.92 ERA and 18 saves in 57 games last season. He is in the running for a bullpen slot after working in high-leverage situations down the stretch. The Royals signed Carlos Estévez in free agency and kept relievers Lucas Erceg, Sam Long, Angel Zerpa, Chris Stratton, Hunter Harvey, and John Schreiber, among
