The New York Mets have officially re-signed Pete Alonso, a four-time All-Star first baseman, in MLB free agency. New York agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract with the right-handed slugger, bringing back its cleanup hitter with a career.854 OPS in 846 games. Alonso’s re-signing was not New York’s only major offseason move. The 2024 National League finalists inked five-time Silver Slugger Award winner Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract.

As Spring Training approaches, New York has made a decision on another All-Star free agent coming off a successful 2024 season.

The Mets general manager acknowledged to reporters on Wednesday that the team has decided not to re-sign 2015 All-Star infielder Jose Iglesias. “I think where we are now for that role on our team, it’s important for us to keep some avenues open for some of our younger players,” Stearns said of Iglesias. “It’s important for us to have some roster flexibility with that spot.”

Stearns confirmed this decision, saying (via Mets on X) that New York will open the MLB season with their present roster. “We also feel really good about the group we have that’s reporting right now,” Stearns told reporters. “And I would anticipate, by and large, that this is the team we’re going forward with.”

Iglesias has a career.710 OPS, but he had an.830 OPS in 85 games for Carlos Mendoza’s squad last season. Known for his defense, the infielder made a significant impact with his bat last season, registering a.337 batting average in 291 plate appearances.
