The Boston Red Sox will have a lot of fresh faces entering the 2025 MLB season, particularly on the pitching staff.
Garrett Crochet and Patrick Sandoval, both left-handed pitchers, joined the mix this offseason, as did veteran right-hander Walker Buehler. That’s not to mention that 36-year-old flamethrower Aroldis Chapman was brought to the bullpen, and right-handed reliever Adam Ottavino was added on a minor-league deal earlier this week.
Although most teams would be content with such additions, the Red Sox have made another pitching-related signing as spring training progresses.
Red Sox Sign Matt Moore to Minor League Contract
On Thursday, the Red Sox announced the signing of veteran RHP Matt Moore to a minor-league contract. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, the 35-year-old southpaw had been on Boston’s radar for a while.
“The Red Sox pursued Moore in previous offseasons, too,” Cotillo noted. “Like Ottavino, he’ll have an end-of-camp opt-out if he isn’t on the 40-man (roster) by then.”
Moore is a veteran reliever who has appeared in 369 games for eight different teams since the start of the 2011 season. If his spring training bid is successful, the Red Sox will be the seventh club the Walton Beach, FL native has played for since 2023.

Moore enters the MLB season looking for work after a poor showing with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. The former 2007 eighth-round pick failed to live up to his $9 million contract, finishing 5-3 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.345 WHIP, surrendering 2.0 home runs and 4.8 walks per nine innings.
