When the Houston Astros were working hard to bring back Alex Bregman, the idea of Jose Altuve returning to left field was initially floated. If Bregman returned, newcomer Isaac Paredes would go to second base, while Altuve would play outfield.

However, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox last month. Following this, Altuve continued to practice in left field, but it appeared like the nine-time All-Star would only play there as a secondary position. However, Astros manager Joe Espada has made it apparent that there is more to the story. Espada confirmed to reporters, including Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle, that Altuve will play primarily in left field this season.

“Right now, the plan is for him to play the majority of his games in left field,” Espada told reporters. “Back and forth is something that I am going to avoid.” This is definitely a significant update on Altuve. The 34-year-old star spent his first 14 seasons in the majors playing second base and has unquestionably excelled at the position. He most famously won the Gold Glove at second base in 2015 and has been reliable in the field. Despite this, Altuve will move to the outfield.

It will be fascinating to watch Altuve acclimate to his new role from here. He has looked good in left during Spring Training so far.
