The Miami Marlins drastically overhauled their roster before the 2024 MLB trade deadline. However, Sandy Alcántara remains the only star on the roster. Alcántara won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, but he struggled in 2023 and was out for the whole 2024 season due to injury. This spring, the righty has looked like his former self, and it is only a matter of time before the Marlins deal him as well.
FanSided’s Jacob Mount recently proposed a massive trade that would send Alcántara to the stacked Boston Red Sox. “Normally, a player with a rookie campaign like Abreu’s would be a keeper,” said Mountz. “However, with Roman Anthony waiting in the wings, the Red Sox have a reason to make changes in the outfield. Kristian Campbell is another viable outfield option.
“Marcelo Mayer is also departing Beantown. Mayer, Boston’s No. 3 prospect, is currently barred from being promoted due to the team’s crowded infield. Mayer has yet to play at the Triple-A level (despite being promoted), but he has thrived at Double-A and is projected to make his debut this season. He is regarded as an impact hitter with good power and a solid glove.”
This is a significant return for the Marlins. It’s unclear whether the Red Sox would be ready to trade Mayer and Abreu in order to obtain Alcántara, but this deal would undoubtedly benefit the Marlins.
The idea of the Red Sox trading for the Marlins’ ace makes a lot of sense, but the specifics may need to be tweaked. The Red Sox are unlikely to want to trade their future shortstop alongside a promising young outfielder like Abreu, and they would also lose Romero, another middle infield prospect.
