CUBS V T

The Chicago Cubs have a strong core, which is supplemented by veteran players trying to establish themselves during the 2025 MLB season. With the season beginning, Chicago is prepared to compete for the National League Central crown and may look to the trade market to address roster issues and shed a high-dollar deal.

According to Athlon Sports’ trade proposal, the Cubs would send Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki and the remaining five-year, $85 million deal to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for reliever Will Vest. The one-for-one agreement would meet the needs of both teams. Detroit, which was swept in its series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, could use a powerful right-handed bat to fortify its lineup with Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter. As it is, the Tigers lack a legitimate power threat on the right side.

Suzuki has started the 2025 Major League Baseball season slowly, although the sample size is limited. He has hit more than 20 home runs and doubles over the last two seasons. Vest would be an excellent bullpen acquisition and potential closer for Chicago. He had a 2.82 ERA across 70 1/3 innings in 2024, a heavy workload that may make Detroit reticent to let him go. However, purchasing a power bat like Suzuki may be worth the cost.

What Happened to Seiya Suzuki? MLB Injury Update

As trade talks heat up, Suzuki’s name should be on the radar. The Cubs are focused on contending and may want to strengthen their bullpen, particularly with the arrival of Kyle Tucker, making Suzuki more expendable.
