On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals placed infielder Nolan Gorman on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, St. Louis isn’t very concerned about his injuries.
“The Cardinals do not expect Nolan Gorman to miss much time, but they placed him on the injured list because they needed infield depth. The team was uncomfortable being without a man for 4-5 days. “Thomas Saggese will provide bench depth,” Woo stated on X, formerly Twitter.
The Cardinals’ move is retroactive to April 2. Thomas Saggese, who “will serve as bench depth” according to Woo, was recalled in a comparable move.
Gorman struggled in 2024, while being limited to 107 games played. However, the Cardinals continue to believe in Gorman.
He made his major league debut in 2022, having previously been touted as a promising prospect. Gorman showed tremendous potential but struggled in other aspects of his game. 2023 was a breakout year for Gorman, though his campaign was still up and down.
He appeared in 119 games, hitting a career-high 27 home runs and had an.805 OPS. However, he only hit.236 and had an OBP of.328.
In 2024, the Cardinals’ infielder slashed. 203/.271/.400/.671. Gorman hit 19 home runs, but the Cardinals had a dismal season overall.
St. Louis will have to evaluate whether Gorman fits into their long-term plans. A few years ago, the obvious response would have been “yes” without a doubt. However, Gorman’s future with the Cardinals has become more dubious in 2025. With the team rebuilding, he may become a trade target at some time.
The Cardinals will not give up on Gorman. If he can recover from his injuries and play well, St. Louis may consider incorporating him into the team’s long-term plans.
It’s worth noting that he’s still under team control until 2028, so the Cardinals can approach with caution. Nonetheless, Gorman will need to show that he is a player the Cardinals cannot afford to lose.
