The Boston Red Sox are hosting the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game series at Fenway Park, which began Monday. While the 2025 MLB season is still in its early stages, this American League East showdown is especially important given Boston and Toronto’s postseason aspirations.
The Red Sox were 6-4 heading into this game, tied with the New York Yankees for first place. Toronto was directly behind the two powerhouses, with a 5-5 record. While the Red Sox made a splash in free agency by adding two-time All-Star Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract, they also returned numerous crucial players.
Last season, catcher Connor Wong was a key member of Boston’s club. The former third-round pick had a breakout season in 2024, with a career-high 110 OPS+ and driving in 52 runs. Wong departed Monday’s game against Toronto before completing an at-bat, and the Red Sox have since announced that he sustained a hand injury.
“The Red Sox announce Connor Wong left the game with a left hand contusion,” Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald said on X.
Wong has begun slowly in 2025, but his bat was a key component of Boston’s lineup last season. While he fell just short of the required number of plate appearances to qualify for MLB leaderboards, Wong’s.758 OPS in 2024 would have ranked third among qualifying American League catchers (according to MLB records).

The 28-year-old’s removal after one inning on Monday is bad for Boston, which is beginning a huge series against Toronto.
