Philadelphia Phillies utility player Weston Wilson is currently on a rehab assignment with Low-A Clearwater. Wilson has been out with an oblique injury suffered during spring training. This rehabilitation assignment could end no later than April 28. Wilson will then be optioned to the minor minors or added to the Phillies’ 26-man roster. It’s important to remember that this is his final minor league option year if he gets selected. If that is the case, Wilson would most likely be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Wilson would most likely be activated to Triple-A as Kody Clemens has run out of minor league options. In addition, if Clemens were assigned, another team would most likely claim him off waivers.

Phillies’ Weston Wilson Expected To Return From Injured List Relatively Soon

Wilson has a.100/.357/.100 line in four games during this rehab assignment, but he hasn’t hit a home run or an RBI. Along with a 21.4% strikeout rate and a 28.6% walk rate, he also has a 67 wRC+, a.295 wOBA, and a.143 BABIP. During this rehab assignment, Wilson has started three games in left field and one at third base. Given his position on the 26-man roster, it is not wholly unexpected to see him mostly in left. Wilson is a very versatile defensive player. However, considering what is going on with the Phillies right now, it is interesting that Wilson has been playing those two spots. Wilson currently plays one of the two positions with the lowest offensive output.

What Happens With Phillies Roster After Rehab Assignment

Right now, the Phillies’ outfield is struggling with offensive productivity. Since March 31, Brandon Marsh has a dismal -33 wRC+ and is 0-for-32. Of the players with at least 30 plate appearances during that time, Alec Bohm is the only one with a lower wRC+ than Marsh. Add the Phillies game on March 30 and Marsh is 1-for-36 with a 2 wRC+. Among players with at least 30 plate appearances since March 30, Bohm also has the lowest wRC+. But throughout that time, Marsh has the eighth-worst wRC+ in that group. However, after March 3o, Marsh has had the lowest batting average (.036) and slugging percentage (.036) among that group.

Given that Bohm and Marsh are having a rough start to the season, Wilson might replace them on the Phillies’ 26-man roster. Both Marsh and Bohm have two alternatives in the minor leagues. Furthermore, neither Marsh nor Bohm has enough major league experience to turn down a minor league offer. The Phillies have not indicated that they are thinking about optioning either player, despite their difficulties. Compared to Bohm, Marsh is more likely to be optioned to the lower leagues. This is unlikely to occur until Wilson is prepared to be activated from the injured list, given the available replacement possibilities. The most likely consequences are Clemens being assigned and Wilson being optioned.
