To date, one of the Boston Red Sox’s most fascinating players has not played for the team.
The Red Sox are getting ready for the likely debut of No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony after securing an eight-year agreement for No. 2 prospect Kristian Campbell.
But Anthony is now dealing with an ailment that has kept him out of the outfield but hasn’t diminished his offensive ability.
Anthony is experiencing “minor right shoulder soreness,” the Boston Sports Journal’s Chris Henrique reports.
Since he is still having a terrific season for Triple-A Worcester, this is probably not a huge problem, but it is something to keep an eye on. Anthony, who will turn 21 next month, has made 59 plate appearances for Worcester so far and is batting.283, with a.941 OPS and two home runs.
Given his intriguing profile and his Triple-A performance from the previous season, where he batted.344 with a.983 OPS and hit three home runs in 35 games, his scorching start is not surprising. Seeing him develop into the rising star that the front office and fans desire is still heartening.
Although Anthony is making every effort to secure a spot on the roster, there are uncontrollable variables. Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, and Ceddanne Rafaela are Boston’s regular starting outfield trio; Campbell has also played center.
Additionally, Rafael Devers will likely take Masataka Yoshida’s place as designated hitter after he returns off the injured list, meaning he will probably have to play in the field.

Rafaela might be moved to the bench if he keeps struggling at the plate, or Yoshida might wind up on the trading block, but neither situation is certain.
With any luck, Anthony will be able to move past this minor ailment and join the Red Sox this summer.
