Fabrizio Romano, a transfer news analyst, has provided an update on Newcastle United and several significant sagas concerning probable arrivals and departures at St James’ Park.
Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano revealed that Newcastle have yet to decide on a potential replacement for Dan Ashworth as sporting director, with this being viewed as a critical decision for the future of their project and thus not something that will be rushed.
Meanwhile, Romano spoke about Callum Wilson’s predicament after the Magpies striker was sought by Atletico Madrid in January, however it appears their interest in the England international has waned.
Another intriguing Newcastle rumor earlier this season included a prospective transfer for former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who is still a free agent after leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season.
It appears that De Gea was interested in joining Newcastle, but the club ultimately decided not to pursue the transaction, and it appears that nothing has happened since, with the Spaniard unable to discover an offer that he appears to be willing to accept.
Fabrizio Romano’s Newcastle transfer update
Romano wrote in today’s column, “It will be an interesting time at Newcastle United because they want to hold important internal discussions about how to replace Dan Ashworth.”
“From what I gathered, this is not yet 100% obvious, and Newcastle wants to take their time so they don’t make the wrong move…It is critical that they continue working on their project in the best possible way.
“Callum Wilson appears to be in a slightly unclear situation at Newcastle following the January saga with Atletico Madrid. Atletico Madrid is still not in communication with Wilson or Newcastle.
“Their last communication was in early January, and Newcastle responded with an unequivocal no. So I’m not convinced they’ll return; Atletico Madrid only evaluated it as a six-month loan.
“A lot of supporters have been asking me about David de Gea’s future after he almost joined Newcastle. He was interested in joining Newcastle in November/December when they had a goalkeeper emergency, but the club ultimately decided not to hire a new goalie.
“Now, we get a lot of rumors every week, but there is no update and nothing is happening. He is waiting for the appropriate occasion to present itself.”
