Joe Willock returned to Newcastle United’s starting lineup for the second time this season in the Premier League.
Joe Willock started only his second Premier League game for Newcastle United this season, a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park.
The midfielder’s only other Premier League appearance this season came in a 2-0 loss to AFC Bournemouth in November. Willock’s contribution has been restricted this season due to injuries, with hamstring and Achilles issues holding him out of preseason and the first few months of the 2023-24 season.
He returned briefly in October and November before suffering a setback that would keep him out for three more months.
Willock’s return to the starting lineup was well received by his midfield teammate Bruno Guimaraes. Saturday’s win against Wolves marked Guimaraes and Willock’s first Premier League start together since a 4-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in May 2023.
Following the Wolves win, Willock posted a video on Instagram of Guimaraes’ no-look pass, which created a chance for Miguel Almiron, with the caption: “@BrunoGuimaraes you the best.”
Guimaraes responded to Willock’s post, saying, “With you, it’s easier, Willockinho.”
Newcastle have won 21 and drew seven of the 32 Premier League matches he has started with Willock since joining the club in January 2022, lending credence to the Brazilian’s remark.
Newcastle has also not won a match in which Guimaraes has not played since his arrival. The midfielder is currently one booking away from a two-game suspension in the Premier League.
The Magpies’ next game is at Chelsea on Monday, March 11 (8 p.m. kickoff).
