One of Newcastle United’s former academy players has pushed Eddie Howe to recruit the Geordie defender, who is having an incredible season in the Championship.
Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Ipswich’s Leif Davis, who was a season ticket holder at St James’ Park.
Former academy player Tom Allan, who now plays for Gateshead, has encouraged the club on X to recruit the Championship standout, who has already equaled the record for most assists by a defender in the second league.
Academy graduate wants Howe to bring star back to Newcastle
Davis and Ipswich are having a fantastic season in the Championship after only being promoted from League One late last year, and they are presently in pole position to earn promotion to the Premier League.
Davis has now recorded 14 assists in 33 games at left-back, a defensive record, and scored his first goal of the season on Tuesday, a late winner against Bristol City.
Newcastle are believed to be looking for a new left-back following Dan Burn’s troubles this season, and Davis appears to be ready to make the move up to top-flight football next season.
Allan, who made only one FA Cup game for Newcastle, assisting Joelinton in a 4-1 victory over Rochdale, has spoken out about the defender on social media.
On X, the former Newcastle midfielder wrote, “Bring him home”.
Newcastle need a left-back with more attacking threat
Currently, it appears that Newcastle are fairly limited in what they can do down the left flank due to Burn’s poor ability to run down the wing, and they may try to change that this summer.
Kieran Trippier has demonstrated the importance of having an offensive outlet in the full-back positions, with the England international already contributing 10 assists in the league this season.
Tino Livramento could play in that position, but Howe would almost certainly prefer to have someone better suited to left-back in his Newcastle team while Livramento steps in for Trippier.
Of course, they would need the player to desire to go, but considering Davis’ history with Newcastle, it should be easy to persuade him to join the club.
