Jordan Montgomery, one of the best remaining free agent pitchers on the market, has disclosed his desired landing location.
Montgomery desires to return to the Texas Rangers, according to Randy Miller of NJ.com, in a lengthy post published on Thursday. The Yankees are allegedly becoming increasingly convinced that Montgomery will end up back in Texas.
The Rangers acquired Montgomery from the Cardinals at the trade deadline. Last season, he was 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 11 starts for Texas. He was dominant in the postseason, going 3-1 for the World Series champions. Montgomery has a 3-1 record with a 2.63 ERA in the postseason.
Montgomery is widely regarded as the Yankees’ top free-agent target. The organization may be interested in Blake Snell, but they are waiting for the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner to decrease his asking price. The Yankees are also said to be uninterested in free agency pitcher Shota Imanaga.
Montgomery was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2014 draft. He was with the team from 2017 to 2022, when he was dealt to the Cardinals in exchange for Harrison Bader. In 2018, the 31-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery. In his MLB career, he is 38-34 with a 3.68 ERA.
