Regardless of Newcastle United’s struggles this season, Eddie Howe’s name will most certainly be in the running to replace Gareth Southgate when the time comes.
Alan Shearer believes Eddie Howe will be considered to succeed Gareth Southgate at England.
Whatever happens this summer, the Three Lions could have a new manager in charge. Southgate is currently under contract until after the tournament, and even if England ends their 58-year trophy drought, he may choose to stand down.
The 53-year-old is approaching his eighth year in the position, having taken over a crisis-hit country as caretaker manager. England had just been eliminated from Euro 2016 by Iceland, and Sam Allardyce was fired after just one game in charge.
Southgate is, statistically, England’s second-best manager in history, trailing only Sir Alf Ramsey. However, there is growing opinion that a new coach is needed to lead a Three Lions squad that is widely regarded as the best in a decade.
Howe, the highest-placed English manager last season, has previously been linked with the hot seat. The Newcastle manager, while admitting “never say never,” toned down the notion following the most recent World Cup.
Graham Potter, Lee Carsley, Jose Mourinho, and Pep Guardiola are all potential contenders if the position becomes open. On Peter Crouch’s show, Newcastle icon Shearer mentioned Howe as a future candidate.
“The obvious one last season was Eddie Howe but you know how football works,” Shearer went on to say. “He led Newcastle to fourth place last year, and while they’ve suffered this year, everyone would have picked him last year. There’s no question he’ll be mentioned if and when the England position opens up.”
