He has been injured since early February.
Newcastle United’s injury problems have been well chronicled in recent months, with Eddie Howe’s side missing multiple long-term players throughout the 2023/24 season.

Jamaal Lascelles is the latest player to join the Magpies’ injury list, having suffered an ACL tear during a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over West Ham United just a few weeks back.

He joins Sven Botman, Nick Pope, and Joelinton on the sidelines due to injury, with the latter two expected to return before the end of the season.

However, another Magpies first-team player remains injured, with the club considering selling him given his recent injury history.

Callum Wilson’s stats in 2023/24

Striker Callum Wilson has frequently had to settle for Newcastle’s second-best option behind Alexander Isak, which is reasonable given the Swede’s 19 goals in all competitions this season.

The former Bournemouth forward has only appeared 22 times this season and twice in 2024, scoring eight goals in an injury-plagued season.

Wilson has sustained four distinct injuries since the 2023/24 season began in August, forcing him to miss significant amounts of time.

He’s been sidelined by two different hamstring injuries, and a calf injury forced him to miss another two months before suffering a chest injury on his comeback in February’s 3-2 triumph over Nottingham Forest.

Wilson has a history of ailments, having ruptured his ACL twice during his time at Bournemouth, and the now 32-year-old is struggling to string together a run of games before suffering another setback.

That, combined with his significant decline in market worth, should prompt the club to consider selling him when the summer transfer window opens in a few months.

Nearly four years after his £20 million move to St James’ Park, Wilson’s market worth has fallen by more than half, with injuries playing a significant role in the reduction.

According to Football Observatory, the striker is now only worth £8.5 million, making him £77.5 million less valuable than man of the hour Bruno Guimaraes, who is worth £86 million.

The 32-year-old attacker has only one year left on his current contract with the club, and Wilson will turn 33 before the end of next season. Having said that, the club should attempt to trade him this summer, just a few months after he was linked with Manchester United and Arsenal.

Howe and the Saudi PIF should look to sign a new young striker who can develop and learn from current forward Isak while also providing serious competition for the former Real Sociedad player.

Wilson has been an excellent addition to the Magpies over the last few seasons, but his injuries have recently taken their toll. Newcastle must chip in to prevent him from leaving the club for free in 2025.
