Dermot Gallagher of Sky Sports reviews controversial Premier League rulings after each round of games.
The former top referee has now made his decision on the events in the Newcastle against Tottenham encounter.
Dermot Gallagher examines what happened shortly after the hour mark at St James’ Park.
Dermot Gallagher talking to Sky Sports about this Newcastle 4 Tottenham 0 controversy:
Incident:
With Newcastle United cruising to a 3-0 lead and Tottenham completely overwhelmed, James Maddison became frustrated. A really high challenge with his studs into Jacob Murphy’s back, up near the upper back/neck area. The referee issued merely a yellow card, and VAR did not intervene.
Dermot Gallagher’s verdict:
The yellow card is correct, not the red.
Dermot Gallagher says:
“We’ve got to be careful not to be too rash.
“It’s not a nice tackle but he doesn’t follow through.”
Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith added:
“He (Maddison) pulls back when he realises he’s going to make contact.”
