Yankuba Minteh, a Newcastle United loanee, won his first major prize with Feyenoord this weekend.
Yankuba Minteh, the Newcastle United winger on loan at Feyenoord, had a tumultuous weekend.

The 19-year-old won the KNVB Cup with Feyenoord, who defeated NEC 1-0 at De Kuip on Sunday. Igor Paixao scored the game’s solitary goal, which was twice delayed by fireworks, before Minteh received his first professional red card, making it a stressful conclusion for the Dutch team.

Minteh received two yellow cards in rapid succession and was dismissed with 18 minutes remaining in normal time. Feyenoord held on to their little lead and won the Dutch Cup.

Minteh has been in good form for Feyenoord, scoring 10 goals in 34 games since signing on loan from Newcastle last summer, including one in the Champions League. The Magpies paid roughly £7 million for the adolescent from Odense before promptly loaning him away.

He has yet to play or train with Newcastle’s first team, but head coach Eddie Howe and his staff will give the winger a closer look this summer following a solid season in the Netherlands.

Feyenoord want to keep Minteh for at least another season, but Newcastle may contemplate selling the teenager for a fast profit amid PSR difficulties.

There is a lot of enthusiasm about the teenager, but sources from Feyenoord indicate that the winger still has a lot to learn and improve on if he wants to take his game to another level.

Arne Slot, Feyenoord’s manager, recently told Ziggo Sport/FR12: “He has largely played in his native country, where there is little tactical involvement. When you’re that fast, however, it’s a powerful weapon. He disappears with a single motion, and you are unable to catch up with him.

“I believe his choices are already improving in the final stages. The only thing that bothers us is that if his selections improve significantly, he will most likely stop playing with us.

Minteh will return to Newcastle this summer, having become the club’s first signing since the 2021 takeover to win a major prize. The Magpies are presently investigating pre-season possibilities that might include Minteh, with a trip to Japan being discussed.
