Newcastle United’s Premier League unbeaten streak came to an end on Wednesday evening as they were defeated 2-0 at Crystal Palace.
Jean-Philippe Mateta gave Palace the lead early in the second half, before Newcastle’s penalty appeal was denied. VAR reviewed Will Hughes’ pull on Sean Longstaff within the penalty area, but did not overrule Tom Bramall’s on-field ruling.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe reflected on the penalty decision, saying: “I thought so live, but after seeing it again, it’s probably a 50/50 call, and it went against us.
But Newcastle defender Fabian Schar was sure that a penalty should have been awarded by VAR.
“Even their player thought it was a penalty, I believe,” Schar told the club website. “What I saw was rather obvious, and it would be a pivotal moment in the game at 1-0, but we can’t blame it on what occurred.
“Overall it wasn’t good enough, [the penalty decision] could have changed the game the rest of the game was not at the level we want to be.”
Mateta then extended Palace’s lead in the final seconds, as Newcastle fell behind Manchester United in the Premier League table with five games remaining. If the table remains same, seventh place will be sufficient to secure qualification for next season’s Europa Conference League.
Newcastle face bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United at St James’ Park on Saturday (3pm kickoff).
