Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup defeat against Chelsea was a spirited one.
Of course, Anthony Gordon was sent off at Stamford Bridge after a terrible challenge from Chelsea player Moises Caicedo.
Newcastle’s Carabao Cup campaign was then terminated by Kieran Trippier’s error, as the Blues leveled the tie late on before winning a penalty shootout.
A promising night turned sour, with Callum Wilson’s opening meaningless in the end.
The striker did an excellent job of capitalizing on a defensive blunder by the home team and then duly celebrated in front of the Chelsea fans, shushing them after his goal.
He has now stated why.

Wilson admitted on The Players Channel Podcast that the home fans had riled him up.
“While we are on it [respect] as a subject,” he went on to say.
“We were at the Bridge, I scored my goal, I’m running off celebrating and just excited, and you know how it is when you score in an away stadium, it’s fingers up, this, that, all kinds of gestures and hand signs.” I was simply minding my own business when I realized, nah, I’m not having it! “I’m seeing specific people.”So I just came to a halt, kissed someone, and told them to be quiet.
“After the game, people were telling me, ‘Callum shushes the Chelsea fans,’ why are you shushing people again about respect!” Nothing I can do! Someone is pointing their finger at me, and I just keep walking? Alright.”
Callum Wilson: Newcastle’s star will need to be at his best against Luton Town.
Despite the defeat, it was fantastic to see Wilson back in the goals after struggling against AC Milan in the Champions League.
With Alexander Isak still out, Eddie Howe requires the striker to be at his best. If you get lost on Kenilworth Road and continue to struggle on the road, the pressure will really start to build up after a challenging few weeks.
Newcastle will need a great finisher like Wilson to capitalize on chances if they are to break Luton down.
