After finishing third in the AL West last season, the are off to a much better start this season, sitting first with a five-game lead over the Texas Rangers after today’s MLB games. While the Mariners are in first place today, there are still 95 games to play.

However, we could see additional roster changes in Seattle before the MLB’s trade deadline on July 30. In fact, the Mariners may be looking to make a substantial move before the end of summer.

According to sources for USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Mariners might be a major factor in their future trade negotiations before the deadline.

“This is the year, rival executives say, that the Seattle Mariners make their boldest move at the trade deadline and acquire offensive help knowing they have a legitimate chance for the World Series with their star-studded starting rotation.”

A spectacular trade deadline move by the Mariners would be consistent with previous seasons. Seattle has added star players like Luis Castillo in 2022, but what if executives believe the Mariners have a bigger move planned? This summer may be enjoyable.

Nightengale describes Pete Alonso, a New York Mets slugger, as “the perfect fit” in Seattle. Alonso is in the final year of his Mets contract and will be eligible for free agency this winter, where he is likely to receive offers worth up to $200 million. If the Mariners can sign him now and show him how thrilling it can be to play baseball in Seattle at T-Mobile Park, they may have a better chance of negotiating a long-term contract later.

However, Alonso is likely not the only player Seattle is keeping an eye on ahead of the trade deadline, and as Nightengale points out, he would be an excellent fit for the Mariners.
