Yankees sign a White Sox reliever. Tim Hill previously appeared on NBC Sports Chicago.
The New York Yankees signed Tim Hill, a former White Sox left-handed reliever, the organization said Thursday. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the contract is for one year.
To create place for Hill on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated left-handed pitcher Clayton Andrews for assignment.
Hill, 34, joined with the White Sox as a free agent this offseason. He has made 27 appearances for the squad this season and pitched 23 innings. He had a 5.87 ERA and 2.217 WHIP, which were quite poor.
He’s played nine games for the team and hasn’t recorded a save. In 118 hitters faced, he has struck out 13, walked 10, and allowed 41 hits.
Hill wasn’t particularly impressive with the White Sox during his brief tenure. The South Side has long been weak on left-handed relievers. They now have only two active players on their roster: Jared Shuster and Tanner Bank.
Hill was selected in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Royals. He played in the majors for two seasons before being traded to the Padres in 2020, where he spent the following four seasons. After being granted free agency this season, he joined the White Sox.
