Harsh business of baseball forces Cardinals to DFA Giovanny Gallegos

However, the brutal truth is that baseball is a cold business. If Gallegos struggles, as he has for the majority of the season, St. Louis cannot afford to give him innings as they compete for the NL Wild Card. That’s why Mozeliak gave Gallegos the duty on Sunday afternoon.

Perhaps this indicates St. Louis will add to its bullpen before the deadline, but even some Memphis additions would be more useful than Gallegos has been this season. Gallegos recorded a 3.05 ERA in 57 relief appearances with the St. Louis Cardinals two years ago. However, sometime between now and then, his strategy went astray. Gallegos may benefit from a fresh start, even if it is in the minors. It’s not personal.

“I like this guy a lot,” Marmol stated about Gallegos. “Look at this guy’s workload over the previous few years; he’s been a horse for us. So, if someone has a down spell, it’s easy to dismiss them, but I have tremendous regard for Gio.

Gallegos is fairly restricted at this point in his career, as left-handed hitters often tee off against him. Until he can address it, among other issues, the Cardinals are correct to dismiss him.
