Eddie Howe has dismissed reports that Newcastle United are attempting to sign Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke this month, claiming that the club cannot afford to do so.
Newcastle’s manager is keen for reinforcements, but the club is hampered by Premier League financial constraints.
Newcastle are on a tightrope in terms of staying under the Premier League’s expenditure rules, with recent records showing a loss in excess of £70 million for the previous fiscal year.
The club can only afford to sign loan players this month, although there are reports that Newcastle are interested in signing Solanke from Bournemouth.
Howe signed the striker while in charge of Bournemouth, but he stated that Newcastle had made no approach for him.
Newcastle’s management also stated that the club cannot afford to sign a player of his caliber at this time due to financial restrictions.
“A frustrating story for me because, yes, I love Dominic Solanke, I signed him, and I rate him very, very highly,” Howe stated during a press conference.
“But we have not made an enquiry for him and we don’t have the ability to sign a player of that level.”
Given their injury crisis, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle can bring in any important new faces.
