The official first week of college football is just a few weeks away, and one of the most anticipated games of opening weekend is Georgia vs. Clemson at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. It has been rated as a top-25 battle since both teams were ranked in the preseason AP poll, and the Clemson Tigers may be without one of their defensive backs for the highly anticipated game.

According to Clemson Insider, defensive back Shelton Lewis sustained a lower-leg injury at Clemson’s scrimmage this weekend. They further stated that Lewis was on crutches and was unable to put any pressure on his leg. Lewis, a sophomore, was contending for a starting position in the secondary. Last season, he appeared in 13 games for Clemson, starting two. He had ten tackles, two interceptions, and a touchdown last season.

The Tigers are expected to have one of the best defenses in college football this season, but losing a valuable player like Lewis is a blow to the team. Especially with a showdown against quarterback Carson Beck, who is anticipated to compete for the Heisman this season.
