The Orioles confirmed this evening that Nick Maton had cleared outright waivers. Rather than opting for free agency, he accepted an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. Baltimore designated Maton and lefty Cole Irvin for assignment on Saturday, and the Twins acquired Irvin off waivers.

Maton has spent two brief spells on the major league roster. He has had five at-bats, going hitless with two strikeouts. The 27-year-old infielder has had a terrific season with Norfolk. Maton has 16 home runs and an impressive 13.2% walk rate in 86 games, resulting in a.261/.368/.477 slash. In just over 1000 plate appearances at Triple-A, he has a batting line of.251/.367/.431.

Orioles Outright Nick Maton - MLB Trade Rumors

Maton, a former Phillies seventh-round draft pick, was traded to the Tigers in exchange for Gregory Soto. He played a career-high 93 games for Detroit last season but struggled on both sides of the ball. Maton slashed.173/.288/.305 in 249 plate appearances. That, combined with his lack of options, has caused teams to pass on claiming him for the second time this season.

Maton will remain as non-roster infield depth. If the Orioles do not call him back up, he will be eligible for minor league free agency when the offseason begins.
