Texas fans will know who will start at quarterback in the Longhorns’ first SEC conference game against Mississippi State on Friday this week.

Texas football has been without its typical starting quarterback since early in the second quarter of their Week 3 home game against the UTSA Roadrunners. Quinn Ewers, a redshirt junior quarterback, suffered an abdominal strain injury in the first half of Texas’ game over UTSA many weeks ago.

Ewers’ status remains uncertain for the SEC-mandated injury report for the conference opener this weekend at home against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on September 28.

During a Zoom press conference with the media on September 26, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian stated that the team will wait until September 27 to decide if Ewers will start as quarterback in the SEC opener versus Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon.

“We’re going to decide on the quarterback thing tomorrow. It won’t be a secret. We’re not trying to pull the wool over anybody’s eyes. Just want to give Quinn every opportunity to see if he’s ready to play and what he looks like. I’d say he’s improved every day. I think Arch has had a very good week.”

Ewers has “improved every day” in practice this week as he recovers from an abdominal strain injury, according to Sarkisian.

Sarkisian also said in his Thursday news conference that redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning and true freshman Trey Owens had both performed well in practice this week.

Manning guided the Longhorns to victory in his first collegiate quarterback start last Saturday, defeating the UL-Monroe Warhawks 51-3 at home. Manning also completed 9-of-12 throw attempts for nearly 200 yards and five touchdowns against UTSA after entering the game after Ewers had an injury in the first half of Week 3.

In his three starts this season, Ewers has completed 58-of-79 pass attempts (73.4 completion %) for 691 yards, eight passing touchdowns, and two interceptions.

We will continue to monitor Ewers’ injury status in the final 48 hours before kickoff versus Mississippi State this weekend, with Sarkisian’s starting quarterback decision coming tomorrow.
