The Cardinals will not hand over the greatest roster available to Chaim Bloom by the end of 2025.
This season, the St. Louis Cardinals suffered a significant collapse. They watched as their entire season collapsed just months after being acquired at the trade deadline.
They expect to lose first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in free agency, as well as trade or cut the majority of their pitching rotation, which includes Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Miles Mikolas. This utter collapse has fueled speculation that they would look for a new manager and general manager this offseason, replacing Oli Marmol and John Mozeliak.
However, the Cardinals’ official strategy has been disclosed, and it makes no less sense.
They’re continuing with Marmol as manager and retaining Mozeliak as general manager this season. Chaim Bloom will take over after Mozeliak’s contract expires after the 2025 season.

This idea just does not make sense. The Cardinals have decided to allow the man who has led their club into an unavoidable rebuilding take over for another calendar year just because he has one more year on his contract.
Rather than turning the team over to Bloom, who is a much better match for the post, the Cardinals are effectively waving the white flag on 2025. Everyone in St. Louis understands Bloom is more suited for the job. That is precisely why he is scheduled to take over next year.
Bloom has a proven track record with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he radically transformed the team, and most recently with the Boston Red Sox. Bloom will be mocked by Red Sox supporters, in particular, because of the rebuild that he is in charge of.
The Cardinals’ pitching staff is ancient, as is their lineup’s nucleus of talent. They’re already attempting to trade Sonny Gray, which would likely provide little in return. They’re not awful enough to ever land top draft picks, hence the top end of their farm system isn’t as strong as other companies’. JJ Weatherholt and Tink Hence are promising players, but their system as a whole has to be revamped.
Bloom has excelled in the AL East in the past, but he may face one of his most difficult assignments with the Cardinals at the end of the 2025 season.
