The St. Louis Cardinals are still looking for a team ready to take on Nolan Arenado’s contract and the $52 million he is owed. Teams are starting to add parts, making the market even more difficult to traverse. However, there is one team the Cardinals may contact about Arenado: the Philadelphia Phillies.
Reports have circulated that the Phillies are in talks with other teams around the league about Alec Bohm, but the Phillies are not currently shopping Bohm. Even yet, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller anticipated that the Cardinals and Phillies will switch third basemen.
“One of the six teams on Arenado’s initial list of preferred landing spots was the Philadelphia Phillies,” according to Miller. “For it to make sense, however, the Phillies must trade Bohm, maybe as part of an unusual three-team transaction. Miller’s predicted transaction would involve three teams.
“The Trade: St. Louis sends 3B Nolan Arenado to Philadelphia; Philadelphia sends 3B Alec Bohm to Seattle; Seattle sends SS Colt Emerson (Joel Reuter’s No. 35 overall prospect) to St. Louis,” said Miller. This trade makes a lot of sense for everyone concerned. The Phillies acquire an improvement at third base to make them a contender, the Cardinals get Arenado’s salary off their books, and the Seattle Mariners gain some much-needed offensive power.
If the deal goes through, it would mark the beginning of the Cardinals’ rebuild. However, the Cardinals would still have a solid third baseman to build around.
