Following their loss in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, the New York Yankees have been working to improve their roster. Brian Cashman, the general manager, still has a vacancy at second base. Could he cover the void by re-signing two-time All-Star Gleyber Torres?
Torres publicly indicated earlier this year that he wants to stay a Yankee for the rest of his life. However, Cashman remained noncommittal, and a reunion between the Bombers and the infielder appears doubtful. Torres concluded 2024 with a.709 OPS, 15 home runs, and 63 RBI, following a.800 OPS, 25 home runs, and 68 RBI in 2023.
Could the Washington Nationals be a legitimate destination for the 28-year-old slugger? Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball believes Torres is bound for the nation’s capital.
“Being that he is one of the few starting second basemen on the market, with utility infielders Ha-Seong Kim and Jose Iglesias representing the other top free agent options at the position, Torres should have plenty of interest,” according to Finkelstein. “With that said, teams may be wary of committing too many years to Torres, despite the fact that he is only 28 years old.”
Torres’ anticipated worth for a multi-year contract entering the 2024 season was four years and $68 million, according to Tim Britton of The Athletic. However, a mediocre campaign has significantly reduced his market value. Spotrac anticipates a three-year, $20 million contract for the second baseman. Finkelstein predicts Torres will sign a $28 million contract over two years, with an opt-out clause after 2025.
