The St. Louis Cardinals announced early in the offseason that they were hoping to sell star infielder this winter. Arenado is under contract for $64 million, making it difficult to sell him, but the Cardinals are allegedly willing to eat a portion of the deal in order to trade him. Until now, the market for a star third baseman has been dry. Teams that were previously interested, such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, have recently showed less interest. This has left the door wide open for other teams to take their chances.

MLB.com’s John Denton recently stated that the Los Angeles Dodgers had re-entered the Arenado sweepstakes after weeks of supposedly exhibiting little interest. “A sticking point in any Arenado deal could come down to how much of the $64 million remaining on Arenado’s contract the Cardinals are willing to absorb,” Denton wrote in his column. “Initial trade talks in early January fell apart when the Cardinals refused to pay up to $20 million toward the balance of Arenado’s contract,” a source claimed. After failing to make much trade progress elsewhere in January, the Cardinals resumed talks with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Dodgers about possible reworked trades for the star third baseman.”

Los Angeles is not listed as a team that is overly aggressive in its pursuit of Arenado, but this might change rapidly. Adding the Cardinals star to a Dodgers roster that is already the league’s best would be borderline unjust. Despite his age, Arenado remains a talented player who would be an asset to any World Series contender.
