The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, winning 40-22 and capturing the Lombardi Trophy. During the celebration in New Orleans, one former Alabama Crimson Tide athlete received a career-defining distinction.

Jalen Hurts, the Eagles quarterback, was named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl LIX, becoming the first former Alabama player to do so since Joe Namath in Super Bowl III. The Super Bowl MVP is chosen by a mix of NFL-selected media and fan votes on NFL.com.

Hurts was the primary force behind Philadelphia’s offensive performance on Sunday, going 17-22 for 221 yards through the air with two touchdowns and one interception. He also led the club in rushing with 11 carries for 72 yards and a tush-push touchdown in the Caesars Superdome, drawing the first blood. This completes a two-year redemption storyline for the former Crimson Tide quarterback, who lost to the same Chiefs club in Super Bowl 57 two years prior. The team experienced an enormous collapse at the end of the 2023 season, and there were still questions after a 2-2 start to this season.

However, Hurts and his team came out of their bye week on a 10-game winning streak, finally winning the NFC East title with a 14-3 record. They’d march through the postseason, defeating the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington Commanders before beating the Chiefs on Sunday to claim the franchise’s second Super Bowl championship. Hurts is the third former Alabama player to win Super Bowl MVP, following Namath and Bart Starr, who won the award in the first two games.
