Terry Francona opted to leave his managerial position with the Cleveland Guardians after 11 seasons in 2023. Now with the Cincinnati Reds, Francona explained why he made the move.
It was driven by health concerns, as stated at the time of his choice. Francona now confirms that leaving the Guardians came with no ill will towards the franchise or the game of baseball, according to Jayson Stark of The Athletic.
“I had a nice year being away from the game, it was good for me,” Francona told the crowd. “When you fess up that you need to be away, you’re probably a little late on pulling the trigger.”
“I didn’t leave because I was angry or loathed the game. I just didn’t feel like I was doing my job correctly. I worked hard this year to get into a situation where I could accomplish it,” Francona said. “I know when the season begins, it will be a test. But it simply feels wonderful to be excited. I didn’t want to jump into anything I wouldn’t feel comfortable with. Even on good days, this can be a difficult task.”
Francona’s final season in Cleveland saw the Guardians finish 76-86 and miss the playoffs. The Guardians missed the postseason for the second time in three years. At the moment, Francona thought it was time to take a step back and reconsider his position as a manager.
His career with the Guardians concluded with a 921-757 record. Cleveland reached the playoffs six times during Francona’s tenure, winning the AL pennant in 2016.
Terry Francona has finally found himself after a year away from the game. He is joining a Reds side that has not made the playoffs since 2020. However, the team is loaded with rising talents eager to make an impact. Cincinnati is hoping that Francona’s 1,950 victories, three Manager of the Year titles, and two World Series rings will be the missing piece.
Francona has no quarrel with the Guardians. He still remembers his time in Cleveland warmly. Simply put, he needed a fresh start to get back to where he wanted to be as a manager.
