The Royals have recruited Ned Yost as a senior consultant to general manager J.J. Picollo, reuniting the manager who guided the team to back-to-back American League pennants and a World Series championship in 2015.
The move was revealed Tuesday, one day before pitchers and catchers were supposed to report to spring training.
“My deep love for the Royals, Kansas City, and the people there never left,” said Yost, 69, who retired after the 2019 season. “I just want to assist, because I know I can. I understand what it takes to develop a world championship club, and I believe we’re getting close. I believe we’re getting extremely close.”
“Our fans remember Ned’s leadership helping produce some of the best moments in Royals history,” Picollo told the crowd. “He knows what winning a World Series here takes because he’s helped make it happen, and his experience both as a leader and with young players will help us make better decisions and keep pushing toward another championship.”
