The Kansas City Chiefs added depth to their defense Tuesday ahead of their Divisional Round game against the Buffalo Bills this weekend. The change will improve the secondary’s defensive scheme versus the run in the playoffs.
The Bills’ 31-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers featured an excellent rushing attack. The Bills rushed for 179 yards against the Steelers. They plan to dominate the clock and run the ball against the Chiefs on Sunday.
The Kansas City Chiefs signed a safety.
Bryan Cook, the Chiefs’ safety, went on injured reserve in December. The Chiefs will be without him during the playoffs. The team added a player to the safety room on Tuesday. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC, the Chiefs have signed undrafted rookie Trey Dean to the 53-man roster.
Dean spent the regular season on the New York Jets’ practice squad before joining the Chiefs this week.
According to Dean’s draft report in Sports Illustrated, the former Florida standout is most effective as a run defender.
Impressive run support player with a tremendous feel for delivering the thump to ball carriers; does an excellent job of taking the ball down at or near the line of scrimmage. Coverage abilities are still developing, and it is difficult to discern how route concepts grow.
A go-for-broke tackler who benefits from huge impacts will need to focus more on wrapping up ball carriers if he wants to play more plays in 2021. An underdeveloped safety who is most suited for the box at the next level, where he can be a defensive enforcer.
Dean will face a daunting job against the Bills on Sunday if the Chiefs want him to play after signing with the team the day before the week’s first practice.
