The 2025 NFL offseason has only just begun, and there is a lot of turmoil surrounding the Los Angeles Rams. The team is set to sell veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp, but they may also part ways with quarterback Matthew Stafford. Meanwhile, head coach Sean McVay has finalized his coaching staff for the upcoming season, and he is bringing Alex Van Pelt, the New England Patriots’ former offensive coordinator, to town.
Van Pelt led the Patriots’ offense for one season before being replaced by Josh McDaniels as part of Mike Vrabel’s new coaching staff. It didn’t take long for him to find a new home, as he has joined McVay’s team in Los Angeles as a senior offensive coach who will also help on defense.
“Rams have added former Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt to their coaching staff,” Adam Schefter of ESPN wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Sean McVay tabs Alex Van Pelt for unique role on Rams coaching staff
Van Pelt has been known for his work with quarterbacks throughout his coaching career, but he will be working in a different capacity with the Rams. Rather than working with the offensive side of the ball, Van Pelt will work with the defense, providing them with a new perspective on what opposition offenses do and what those offenses may be looking for when facing their defense.

While McVay is an experienced head coach at this time, it never hurts to have veterans on your coaching staff, which looks to be the reason for adding Van Pelt. With the coaching staff in place, McVay and the rest of the Rams organization must now focus on determining how their roster will appear for the upcoming season.
