Fans feared the worst when veteran guard Tyrese Proctor sustained an injury during Duke’s game against the Miami Hurricanes. When head coach Jon Scheyer revealed that Proctor had just sustained a bone bruise and would be back for the Blue Devils this season, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Following the injury update, Procotor’s mother sent a touching letter to the Duke community that echoed Scheyer’s excellent news:
“Thanks to everyone who has reached out after hearing Tyrese got wounded,” Melissa Proctor said on social media. “Thankfully, he has no breaks or ligament damage, just bone bruising. I’m confident he’ll handle this like he does everything else, focusing on rehab so he can return to the floor with his team as soon as possible.”
Proctor got the injury in the first half of the Blue Devils’ 97-60 road win over the Hurricanes. As Miami player Divine Ugochukwu was on a fast break, Proctor attempted to contest his shot at the rim but landed awkwardly on his knee.
Ugochukwu and Proctor collided on their knees, and the Blue Devil immediately collapsed in pain. Duke has not provided an official date for Proctor’s return, but he “will be monitored over the next few days or weeks.”
Throughout Duke’s first 28 games, Proctor averaged 29.1 minutes per game, resulting in 11.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.

The Blue Devils have only three regular-season games left (vs. Florida State, Wake Forest, and at North Carolina). Duke is the ACC’s top team and will most likely have byes in the first two rounds of the conference tournament, which begins on March 11.
