Matt Sieg may be committed to the Penn State Nittany Lions, but the Notre Dame football team thinks he could change his mind. That’s why Marcus Freeman and his team chose to offer the four-star safety this week.
According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the McDonald, Pennsylvania native is the fifth-ranked player in the Keystone State and the seventeenth-ranked safety in the nation. He also joined a class that was ranked fifth in the country before he made his vow. He made the vow in November 2024, just before the Nittany Lions took on the Ohio State Buckeyes.
It’s unclear whether Sieg is beginning to believe Penn State isn’t the right fit for him or if the Notre Dame football staff simply wanted to see if new running back coach Ja’Juan Seider might help make some headway for one of the best recruits in the 2026 class.
Notre Dame football looking to flip Penn State safety commit Matt Sieg
The most intriguing aspect of the Irish’s offer this week is that he is the second Penn State recruit that Notre Dame has indicated they are interested in in recent weeks.

Marcus Freeman and crew are particularly interested in running back Messiah Mickens, who has made no secret of his tight friendship with Seider while he was the Nittany Lions’ running back coach. Now it appears that they are making progress with another commit who may be close to flipping well before signing day.
