The Boston Red Sox have only one infielder who has hit at least 60 home runs and stolen bases in a single season, and it isn’t Rafael Devers or Alex Bregman. Trevor Story accomplished this accomplishment with the Colorado Rockies in 2018 and 2019, earning All-Star and Silver Slugger Awards each year. His combination of power and speed made him one of baseball’s most dynamic shortstops at that period. Trevor Story has two home runs today, both over the monster.

In an effort to bring such production to Boston, the Red Sox signed Story to a six-year, $140 million contract in 2022. In exchange, they’ve had three injury-plagued seasons from their star middle baseman. However, for what appears to be the first time in his Red Sox career, Story is healthy this spring – and absolutely raking.

Friday’s spring training game against the Miami Marlins provided a glimpse at what Story can still contribute to the table. He went 3-for-4, hitting two home runs, driving in three runs, and reaching base three times. Through seven games this spring, the 31-year-old has a.476/.500/.905 batting line, with six hits. Three of those games have included multiple-hit efforts.

Trevor Story returns to lineup for struggling Red Sox

A completely healthy Story might transform Boston’s offense. His track record speaks for itself: everytime he plays at least 97 games in a season, he hits no less than 24 home runs. That kind of power in the order is something the Red Sox have sorely missed in their middle infield.

Story wasn’t the only one who performed admirably in the Marlins’ 20-5 defeat at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida, on Friday. Boston erupted with six home runs, including one by Bregman in the third inning. If Story keeps up this pace and stays healthy, he might soon become one of the biggest comeback stories of the 2025 MLB season.
