The Detroit Tigers acquired left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn from the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.
Horn was designated for assignment when the Cardinals signed veteran reliever Phil Maton. The Tigers provided monetary considerations to complete the transaction.
Horn is in his second stint with the Tigers organization. The Tigers claimed him off waivers from the Boston Red Sox in November, but released him a month later when they signed second baseman Gleyber Torres.
Horn, 27, played college baseball at Auburn before being taken in the fifth round by the Chicago White Sox in 2020. He was moved to the Chicago Cubs in 2021, then back to the White Sox in February of last year, and finally to the Boston Red Sox for financial considerations in April.
Horn pitched well for Triple-A Worcester in 2024, striking out 35 in 29 innings and recording a 2.15 ERA. However, he struggled with command in the major leagues, walking 10 and struck out 13 in 18 innings for the Red Sox.
Horn was optioned to Triple-A Toledo, so he will not be participating in big-league camp or competing for a position on the Opening Day roster.
The Tigers’ 40-man roster has now reached 40.

Catchers (2): Dillon Dingler and Jake Rogers.
Infielders (9): Javier Baez, Jace Jung, Andy Ibañez, Colt Keith, Ryan Kreidler, Zach McKinstry, Trey Sweeney, Spencer Torkelson, and Gleyber Torres.
Outfielders (6) are Kerry Carpenter, Riley Greene, Justyn-Henry Malloy, Parker Meadows, Wenceel Perez, and Matt Vierling.
