For the first 29 games of the 2025 season, the New York Mets have been the greatest club in Major League Baseball. They were the first club this season to achieve the 20-win milestone and presently lead baseball in victories. After crushing their divisional opponent Washington Nationals 19–5, they accomplished this milestone, increasing their advantage in the National League East to 4.5 games over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies. This season, the Mets have benefited from having the greatest starting rotation. The New York rotation as a whole leads the league in ERA (2.62) and is in sixth in WHIP (1.21).
OptaSTATS highlighted the Mets’ previous supremacy on X. “The Mets starting pitchers have now allowed 4 or fewer runs in each of their first 29 games to begin the season,” the page stated. “It’s the longest streak by a National League team to begin a season in the modern era (since 1901).”
After the Mets created history, Griffin Canning, the team’s starter, spoke to media about his attitude while pitching. “I think it’s just a one-pitch-at-a-time mentality,” Canning stated (via SNY). “Avoid attempting to escape the circumstance. I believe that occasionally you could get it too huge, so just concentrate on making one pitch at a time.”
Canning maintained his supremacy in Monday’s victory over the Nationals. For New York, he pitched five innings while striking out five hitters and giving up 0 runs. Canning has contributed to the Mets becoming the top rotation in Major League Baseball and creating history in the process. It’s no surprise that the Mets have a 20-9 record at the start of the season with a rotation like this.
